A magpie or pica bird gives its name to pica eating disorder in which a person eats things not usually considered food. Young kids often put non-food items (Like soap, clay, chalk, crayons, dirt, etc.) in their mouths because they are curious about the world around them, it is a normal exploratory behaviour present in up to 50% of toddlers. But kids with pica (PIE-khu) go beyond that. Sometimes they eat things that can lead to health problems, if so, it is important to seek professional guidance from a paediatrician.

a) Pay close attention to the characters names, can you identify a pattern? Discuss with your kids what do they have in common?
b) Can you spot a white and black bird in the book? It's called a Magpie or Pica, known for its habit of collecting shiny objects.
c) Do you know what did bubbles symbolize in art during the Renaissance? Look for the phrase in Latin written on Dr. Almond´s notepad and find out.
d) Count how many times can you spot Musk´s (Soaphie´s cat) stuffed toy.
